Q. Important trends of commercial architecture.
Paradigms of our daily life have been greatly shifted since the onset of the Covid19 pandemic. Based on the current scenario, I feel the most ongoing commercial trend that has been accepted and innovated with, is the ‘Work from Home’ ideology. Professionals from all across the world were forced to set-up a semi-permanent or permanent set-up that could be utilized as a viable workspace. As designers, we too manifested our creativity to include a working studio within our homes. These ‘Work from home’ layouts, eventually are being amalgamated with other prominent ideas; including stress-reduction elements, economically sustainable design and comfortable working ambiances; to finally deliver a higher quality of both work and personal life.
Q. Who and what inspires commercial architects and designers each time when they achieve ground-breaking architectural innovations that lend the fresh generation of buildings a slender and smart individuality.
We often have heard the saying that ‘Necessity is the mother of all inventions’. Rightfully so, if we clearly observe, every field and type of Architecture irrespective of the typology, achieves innovation and advancement when there is a need for the same in our society. For our team at Intaglio, we tend to create our inspiration from the requisites of the client or the society, as a whole. This aids us to be relatable to a large number of audience and present designs that narrate the contemporary tale and yet possess a unique facet of their own.
Q. Tell us about your upcoming projects that are built with modern innovations in commercial architecture.
We are currently working on numerous interesting commercial projects, including a minimalistic retail store named ‘Balenzia’ in Mumbai, a nail salon in Lucknow, a non-alcoholic cafe in Kanpur and a Site Office for Passion Group. These are sure to be executed with the innovation and humane qualities that is the benchmark of Intaglio Design Studios.
Q. How has technology facilitated the development and widespread utilisation of commercial buildings for sustainable social development?
Since the introduction of Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology, architects have been working at creating ‘Smart Structures’ which promise unseen levels of energy efficiency, optimisation and user productivity and well-being. As a result, we will be able to not only create structures and facades that do not exploit natural resources but also elevate the lives of people globally. Additionally, when applied in smaller aspects of design, BIM has the potential to aid any architect to create structures for the society that even assist to maintain a socio-economic balance and grant a feasible living for all beings on this planet. Thus, when practiced with sensibility, other forms of technology too can be used for enhanced Commercial Architectural stalwarts.
Q. What does the future hold for commercial architects and architectural plans that will work towards making a durable impression of ecological care, conservation of energy and value-added resource management?
Futuristically, I feel the way ahead lies in ‘flexible and multifunctional’ designs. Practically, this is significant, as a multi-functional space will lead to maximum utilization of all resources available and reduce harmful ecological effects to a great deal. As cited earlier, the ‘Work from Home’ design concept is a strategic and clear hint as to the way amenable designs are what the organic scenario demands and is a requisite of the upcoming times.
Q. In commercial architecture or as an architect what do you think has changed for good and what still needs have thorough improvement.
The emergence of co-working spaces and similar commercial properties is an idea that I feel is the need of the hour. It enables users to function in compact layouts, that are efficient and is a pragmatic approach forward. On the contrary, the scale in which this idea is being implemented needs some more effort. As a concept it should be executed, not only in large metropolises but also smaller towns and cities; such that all working professionals, irrespective of their geographic location have the access to a well-designed and facilitated working space.
