Sarabjit Singh, Delhi based designer and architect, believes the market for high-end interiors projects has just opened up. 2021 will be the year of the revamp, when our worklife and homelife coming together will create a new design, a new search for solutions, and a new ? to find solutions. “And then remember, a new entity, the mid-space is cropping up, when we tire of the new homeoffice and cannot go back to the oldoffice,” says Sarabjit, Architectural Designer & Founder of Villa Ortiga, “and this is not urban space but can be created in a rural area thanks to xyz communication.” He believes younger designers should combine their passion for the art of design with knowledge if not training in technical know-how, for example, 3-D design. The coming together of architecture, interiors, products, fashion, graphics, and now virtual reality—has been the most exciting development of this century, accelerated in unimaginable ways by computing.

And yet at least two thousand years of art which can be witnessed in museums all over the world are Sarabjit’s greatest source of inspiration. Having left home for the US after schooling in New Delhi, Sarabjit has been especially drawn to display art in institutions in Britain, Turkey, Thailand and China. He says, “My inspiration comes from travel, art and adventure.”

Q. What is your source of inspiration for new and creative design ideas?

My Inspiration comes from Travel art and adventure!

Q. How would you describe the designs of your top projects? Is there anything particularly different about them?

An elite project is never elitist because of a client’s brief to his architect and designer is ‘make it elite’ and they know what he means, then all three are copycats. A designer who creates something others value as an elite project, has created something that dominates the rest. It stands out usually because of the execution.

Q. Talking about elite projects, are there any projects that you look up to as constant motivation?

I am self-motivated but I do admire projects in India and abroad such as

  • Hotel de la Coupole MGallery Sapa, Vietnam
  • Louvre, Abu Dhabi
  • Baan Botanica, Bangkok

Q. Tell us what do you think about the idea of functionality and aesthicism mixed together?

How many ways can you design a table? Ok instead of four legs you make one, or two or three, but then your focus is on a number game. Or a work area around a table? What I call ‘After the Pandemic’ design, it is all about how an object meets an area: And when a designer makes art meet area in a unique way that is judged the best of a group, then it is an elite work.

Q. According to you, what are the features of an elite project, and what makes a designer capable to pull off such high-end projects?

Daring. And ofcourse skill in persuading your client to part with his money for your dream. Alternatively, patience in poverty when no one is yet buying into your dream and you create it anyway-for free. Suddenly, quite a few people like your creation, then you upscale.

Q. Is there any message that you would like to give to your audience in large?

Ya, don’t settle for less than the Wow! factor, especially now when in one way or another we are locked inside work and living areas. Do yourself a favour. Whether you work hidden algorithms or drip farming when you wish to dominate with the best possible design in 2021, work with your designer or let him work independently to create something unique and individual. Something imaginative that stands out for its “oh so human” individuality, that reminds others how curiously or caringly or inventively human we can be in the midst of technology.

The coming together of the architectural, interior, product, fashion & graphic fields into one unified field of design is the greatest gift on the 21st century!
