Commercial architecture will witness a paradigm shift towards energy efficiency. Commercial buildings of the past have used glass blindly and intensively, irrespective of the directions of the buildings. Commercial buildings have become energy suckers. The trend in 2021 would be not only to make such buildings aesthetically beautiful but also energy efficient.
Q. Who and what inspires commercial architects and designers each time when they achieve ground-breaking architectural innovations that lend the fresh generation of buildings a slender and smart individuality.
NATURE. It would become the biggest inspiration. 2021 may witness vertical jungles, exposed concrete and brick entering commercial buildings. Intelligent and judicious use of glass would happen. The demand from real estate owners and builders would drive the designers to design buildings, which would require low running cost/ operational cost.
Q. Tell us about your upcoming projects that are built with modern innovations in commercial architecture.
My office is into sustainability, in a big way. Big commercial projects have a huge demand for air conditioning and electrical loads. We try to promote buildings, which are naturally ventilated along with air conditioning. In almost all our projects, we are trying to use the following features:
- Harnessing maximum daylight
- Use of occupancy and day light sensors.
- Double glazed glass units, to reduce heat and increase light transmittance. Glass units were designed differently with different values for different directions.
- Efficient air-conditioning with maximum coefficient of performance.
- Water saving techniques.
- Utilization of renewable energy.
Q. How has technology facilitated the development and widespread utilisation of commercial buildings for sustainable social development?
Building management systems ( BMS) are rapidly used for commercial buildings. The services are effectively controlled through the process of automation. Internet protocols are now playing a major role and creating lot of convenience to the owner. Most of the devices are now IP enabled. CCTV, Wifi, Networking, automation. Security systems, access control, advanced fire fighting systems etc. all have become an integral part of commercial architecture.
Q. What does the future hold for commercial architects and architectural plan that will work towards making a durable impression of ecological care, conservation of energy and value-added resource management?
Commercial architecture needs Designer, who are sensitive towards Mother earth. We have to understand that we may not extract from mother earth for indefinite time. In our greed, we have already disturbed the ecological balance, resulting in global warming and ozone depletion. This sensitivity, mixed with the education and need of the hour ( Sustainability) will pave the way for future commercial building design to happen.
Q. In commercial architecture or as architect what do you think has changed for good and what still needs have thorough improvement.
The best part now is the User/Client getting exposed to good design nationally and internationally. With increased real estate prices, client has become demanding and is willing to pay for systems and talent. A good breed of Design fraternity has now developed in the country, and there appears to be no need for foreign designers to come and work.
